Is your Drupal site ready for Drupal 11?

If you're on Drupal 10 or 9, the move to Drupal 11 is usually an upgrade. If you're on Drupal 7 or 8, it's a migration. Either way, the same questions tell you how big the job is.

And the clock matters now: Drupal 10 reaches end of life on December 9, 2026, which is only weeks away.

Quick checklist

1. What Drupal version are you on? Drupal 7, 8 and 9 are past end of life. Drupal 10 follows in December 2026, so any site still on it needs a plan now. Check current dates on drupal.org.

2. What PHP version does your server run? Drupal 11 was set to require PHP 8.3, and later 11.x releases can raise that minimum. Older hosting often has to change.

3. Are all your contributed modules Drupal 11 compatible? Check each module's project page, or run the Upgrade Status module.

4. Does your custom code use deprecated APIs? Tools like Drupal Rector and the Upgrade Status report find most of these automatically.

5. Does your theme support Drupal 11? Base themes and custom themes both need checking.

6. Is your Drupal 10 core up to date? Sites on older Drupal 10 releases must update to a recent 10.x version before Drupal 11 will install, so bring core current first.

7. Do you have a recent backup and a staging environment? If not, set these up before anything else.

8. Which integrations must keep working? List them now so they are tested, not forgotten.

How to read your results

All green: you are likely a straightforward upgrade.

A few modules flagged: expect replacements or small patches.

Custom modules or an old theme flagged: scope it properly before budgeting.

Drupal 7 or 8: plan a migration, not an upgrade.

Should you wait for Drupal 12?

No. Drupal 12 is arriving in the same week Drupal 10 ends, but most Drupal 10 sites should target Drupal 11.3 or higher in 2026 and treat Drupal 12 as a 2027 decision. Getting onto Drupal 11 now is the step that keeps you supported.
